Wollondilly River Station: An Authentic Australian Escape

    Last updated 6 days ago

One of NSW’s great outdoor havens, Wollondilly River Station in the Southern Highlands, has been running as a private camping ground since 1968. Perfect for families, pet friendly, and set amongst picturesque bush, the operators pride themselves on providing a fair dinkum, bush camping experience. Wollondilly River Station is the perfect location to dust off your camping equipment and escape the rat race.

Only 2.5 hours south-west of Sydney, Wollondilly lies in a valley alongside a beautiful, flourishing river. Camping plots are spread out to ensure peace and privacy. The grounds have basic facilities, including portable toilets, drinking water, a warm shower and camping fires/firewood so all your need is your basic camping equipment and outdoor furniture. In case of fire bans and restrictions it may be a good idea to pack a gas outdoor BBQ.

There is no shortage of activities: swimming, canoeing, fishing, four-wheel driving, bushwalking, mountain biking, camp oven cooking demonstrations and dinners, and breathtaking landscapes for artists, photographers or those who simply enjoy the beauty of Australia’s landscape. Being away from the city lights, the night sky is spectacular and stargazing is at its best. Also in easy reach are the incredible Wombeyan Caves, a natural wonder well worth the excursion, as this family of holidaymakers discovered and captured on film.

Wildlife watchers are also well catered for. Wollondilly is speckled with assorted birdlife from friarbirds to galahs, reed warblers, parrots and the ever-present magpie. By the river look out for ducks, water dragons and turtles and, of course, magnificent kangaroos.

If you’re after an authentic camping experience, Wollondilly is a great choice. If your camping equipment is in dire need of an update, Kangaroo Tent City & BBQs has six shops throughout Sydney and stock everything from dome tents to outdoor furniture. Contact them on 02 8999 7561 today, then book yourself a peaceful plot at Wollondilly River Station.

Be A Responsible Camper: Know The Local Fire Restrictions

    Last updated 13 days ago

Being a very dry, hot country, Australia is prone to bushfires and therefore it’s incredibly important to be cautious when lighting campfires and outdoor BBQs. If you are planning a camping trip, always ensure you are up to date on current fire restrictions.

In order to reduce the number of fires that escape and threaten communities and the environment, the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) controls the use of fires through bans and permits. These restrictions are commonly used during the Bush Fire Danger Period, which usually runs from 1 October to 31 March.

On days when it is very hot, dry and windy, meaning fires are likely to escape and are difficult to control, the NSW RFS will declare a total fire ban. These bans are declared for individual NSW Fire Areas, so know which area you are in. It’s also important to understand the rules for total fire bans. The NSW RFS work with the Bureau of Meteorology to determine local conditions and update their website on a daily basis with the latest fire restriction information.

You can also contact the RFS on 1800 697 737 for updates. If you are in a managed camping ground, the operator can provide you with current local fire restrictions. Alternatively, seek advice from camping shops. They should be able to provide you with current fire restrictions, and also advice on which outdoor bbqs you can use.

It’s possible to still enjoy a great camping experience, while adhering to fire restrictions. The expert staff at Kangaroo Tent City & BBQs camping shops in Sydney can provide you with the latest information on NSW fire restrictions, as well as supply you with all your camping equipment needs. Call them on 02 8999 7561 and don’t let fire restrictions thwart your camping plans.
